Geocodio vs Smarty Comparison

Geocodio and Smarty (formerly SmartyStreets) are both online services that provide geocoding services and allow you to turn addresses into coordinates and coordinates into approximate addresses.

This article compares the two services with some commonly-asked questions.

Does Smarty let you permanently store or share data and results? Does Geocodio let you keep data and results?

It depends on the product. Under Smarty's Subscription Agreement, output data from most Smarty services can be retained perpetually for internal business use by default. US Rooftop Geocoding is the exception. Smarty's own pricing FAQ states that you can keep validated address data even after leaving, yet US Rooftop Geocoding data can only be stored as long as you have an active US Rooftop Geocoding subscription. From the Smarty US Rooftop API Terms of Use:

3.Restrictions: Except as permitted as internal business use purposes, Client shall have no right to disclose, reproduce, copy, reverse-engineer, mine, scrape, modify, assign, distribute, sell, rent, lease, market, publish, transfer, share, or sublicense...

4.Termination and Deletion Obligation: Upon expiration of a subscription or term set forth in a Service Order, Client shall cease use of, delete, destroy, and/or purge from its computer system any Geocoding Content in its possession. Upon request, Client will provide certification of removal, deletion and disposal of Provider's proprietary Content.

Geocodio allows you to permanently store, share, reuse, copy, or otherwise use most results from our service without restrictions. (The only limitation is on UK reverse geocoding, which must be deleted one year after your subscription ends, per Royal Mail’s terms.)

Our caveat is that it must be allowed by the underlying data source license, yet we only integrate underlying datasets that are restriction-free. (See more about our sources here.) Here's the exact language from our Terms:

4.5.1. Provided your usage of Geocodio and the way you acquired, uploaded, and use the data is in compliance with all applicable laws (including but not limited to those listed in section 4.4), there are no additional restrictions on how data from Geocodio is used or stored, provided the license for the underlying data permits it. We use best efforts to determine that our underlying data sources permit replication, but you take responsibility for ensuring your usage complies with our sources' licenses. All results are provided with sources and you understand it is your responsibility to use that information as needed.

4.5.2 Provided the above is satisfied, data from Geocodio, including addresses and coordinates, may be stored in your database, reproduced, or otherwise reused, manipulated, or resold.

Does Smarty have free geocoding? Does Geocodio have free geocoding?

Smarty offers a 42-day trial with 1,000 free lookups for their geocoding, reverse geocoding, and address verification services.

After that, each product is a separate subscription: US Address Verification starts at $50/month, US Rooftop Geocoding at $125/month, and US Reverse Geocoding at $54/month (all lowest published monthly tiers).

What is the accuracy of Smarty geocoding? What is the accuracy of Geocodio geocoding?

Smarty's US Address Verification geocoding results are at the ZIP+4 level, which is roughly equivalent to the block or neighborhood level. Smarty also offers a separate rooftop geocoding product. Unit-level results are a separate add-on as well.

Geocodio's geocoding accuracy is mostly at the individual address level. Given a random sample, 80% of results will be the exact parcel, 10% of the results will be in front of the house on the street, and 10% will be lower accuracy types such as a nearby address, neighborhood, or city-level. All results are returned with an accuracy score, match type (such as building centroid or parcel), and accuracy type so you can easily filter out lower-accuracy results. Secondary unit-level geocoding is included without add-on fees.

What are Smarty's data sources? What are Geocodio's data sources?

It depends on the product. Smarty's ZIP+4 level geocoding, included with US Address Verification, is based on US Census Bureau TIGER data, interpolated to block-level accuracy. For US Rooftop Geocoding and US Reverse Geocoding, Smarty states it maintains its own index of latitude/longitude data compiled from multiple private and public sources, with monthly address data updates from USPS. The individual sources behind the rooftop index are not named.

Geocodio's geocoding engine uses over 3,000 datasets, most of which are official national, state/provincial, and local datasets. As a fallback, Geocodio also provides results from TIGER/Line. All results are returned with the underlying data source. See Geocodio's data sources here.

Does Smarty do address verification? Does Geocodio do address verification?

Yes, Smarty does USPS address verification.

Geocodio does provide USPS address verification, yet is not currently CASS certified. Address verification can be done through the zip4 data append. USPS indicators such as ZIP+4, ZIP9, carrier route IDs, and more are returned as well. See more here.

What is Smarty's pricing? What is Geocodio's pricing?

Smarty's pricing is based around monthly and annual plans, each with a set limit of requests per month. Smarty does not have a pay-as-you-go option.

Each capability is also its own product with its own subscription (published prices as of July 2026):

• US Address Verification starts at $50/month for 1,000 lookups, or $195/year for 12,000 lookups annually, up to $4,980/year for 2 million. Coordinates included with verification are ZIP+4 level (neighborhood precision), not rooftop.

• US Rooftop Geocoding starts at $125/month for 1,000 lookups, or $488/year for 12,000 lookups annually, up to $12,450/year for 2 million. The largest published monthly plan, 170,000 lookups/month, is $1,100/month.

• US Reverse Geocoding starts at $54/month for 25,000 lookups, or $588/year for 12,000 lookups annually, up to $5,388/year for 2 million.

• US Census Block and Tract Data is annual only, from $600/year up to $7,500/year for 1 million lookups. It covers the 2010, 2020, and current Census vintages only.

• US Secondary Address Data (unit-level data) is annual only, from $615/year for 25,000 lookups up to $7,200/year for 1 million.

In practice, this means a team that wants verified addresses with rooftop coordinates and the ability to turn coordinates back into addresses needs three separate Smarty subscriptions, starting around $229/month combined at the lowest tiers. There is no unlimited plan publicly listed, and rooftop geocoding data storage is tied to an active subscription as described above.

How many Smarty products does it take to match one Geocodio plan?

Because each Smarty capability is a separate product, the subscriptions stack up quickly. Take a team processing 170,000 US addresses per month (about 2 million per year) that wants verified addresses with rooftop coordinates, unit-level detail on the roughly 25% of US addresses that have unit numbers, and Census tract data on half of them. With Smarty, that is four subscriptions:

The same workload on Geocodio is one subscription. A geocode with rooftop-level accuracy and unit-level detail costs 1 credit, the USPS ZIP+4 append adds 1 credit per address, and the Census append adds 1 credit for the half that need it. That works out to about 425,000 credits per month, or roughly 5.1 million per year before the 2,500-per-day free tier is subtracted, which fits in a single Flex annual plan at $3,250 per year. That is about a tenth of the cost of the Smarty stack, in one bill, with results you keep even if you later cancel.

Geocodio includes forward geocoding, reverse geocoding, and rooftop-level accuracy in one plan at one price. There are two self-service options: pay-as-you-go and Unlimited. With pay-as-you-go, the first 2,500 lookups per day are free, and then pay-as-you-go after that, with USPS/ZIP+4 data available as an append in the same request. You can estimate your costs here. There is a rate limit of 1,000 API calls per minute when using our single request API endpoint.

Smarty has an upload tool to process lists of addresses. The tool can process CSV files with up to 500,000 addresses, and it can process Excel files with up to 100,000 addresses. See details here.

Smarty supports the US through their own geocoder and has integrated another geocoder for international support. Their international geocoding is a separate product starting at $128/month, or $550/year for 12,000 lookups up to $4,450/year for 120,000 at published annual tiers.
